A strong debut and the start of a pretty great band. Dave Grohl handled everything regarding the first album, writing, instruments and singing; what a guy! I’ve known this for years, but only till now do I own a physical copy, a disgrace really. 3 for £5 at that’s entertainment, I thank. I’m playing it on overdrive, just like the good old days.
I think the opener, ‘This Is A Call’ is one of my favourite songs of all time. ‘Fingernails are pretty, fingernails are good.’ The soft vocals, the guitar riff which makes you want to jump around, clearly the perfect way to start any day. The track ‘Floaty’ is another highlight, it feels like the guitar and words are falling and rising much like a floating piece of fluff. Heavy rock fluff. It is an album which feels like a summer haze, the sun is always glowing orange and everyone feels a little exhausted and angry. At times the album feels a little droning with the raw low beat sounds, but it makes perfect listening when you don’t want to listen to sugar-coated pop beats. Not everything needs to be energised and crazy, it can get a little tiresome. I just like to follow Grohl’s heavy guitar twangs and gruff voice.
