I’m at peace falling through space. The Flaming Lips have been around for years, but only in the last year have I discovered them. Strange how things can be lying around for you to uncover and to then become an everyday part of the now. We aren’t living in the future after all.
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots was the album I opted for thanks to the excellent pt.1 title track. The mix of acoustic guitars and futuristic synth sounds is a perfect combination to provide something fresh and familiar at once. The strong lyrics on life and death have great meaning and the soft relaxed music draws you into their little world. It is probably the first acoustic centered album I’ve ever enjoyed and I really want to go CD hunting for some of the other albums if they are as special as this. ‘Do You Realise??’ is a real strike to the brain as the haunting phrase ‘do you realise that everyone you know some day will die’ breaks in after thoughts of floating through space and having a beautiful face ease you in. It is a moving and manages to give the harsh reality matter an uplifting feeling. Marvelous. There isn’t a single dud on the album and the only really weird part is how ‘Fight Test’ sounds like ‘Father and Son’ by Cat Stevens.
