Currently at war with the mystics. I’ll get right back to you, just hold on! Yeah yeah yeah yeah!
The Flaming Lips have been going for eons, since the dawn of men, but I’ve only experienced their more recent offerings. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots namely. Their soft vocals, acoustic twiddling, sci-fi leanings and lyrics which have a little more meaning than being in deep love with some girl with nice hips make for a refreshing sound, even if the tracks seem to mold together from time to time. So of course I was going to continue my journey through their discography in the future, and the future is now.
Not quite as infectious as Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, but the blend of space age sounds and meaningful lyrics make At War With The Mystics one which slowly burns into the mind. Repeat listens rewards the listener with soft delights as ‘My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion’ and ‘Haven’t Got A Clue’ which start to resemble something quote beautiful after your ears have adapted to the future sounds. The Flaming Lips are pretty good at giving song titles rad names too, where else would you get ‘Vein of Stars’ or ‘The Wizard Turns On…’? Though ‘Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung’ feels a little pompous. Yeah yeah yeah yeah .
The album is perfect to listen to when you’ve been in a coma for one hundred and fifty years and want to find out what the current sounds are, even though music will probably be performed by thoughtless robots with mini skirts by then. No no no no no.
